Hello everyone, and welcome to another watercolour week with me. Those of you with keen eyes might have noticed that it’s a slightly later edition than usual, and that’s because it was a Bank Holiday this Monday - meaning songs, sandwiches and sitting in the sunshine. And of course, a spot of painting outdoors. With an extra-long weekend behind us, it’s meant there’s been time for some well-deserved time off, and I hope you all enjoyed some time to relax as well.
Speaking of fun ways to relax, I’m glad so many of you managed to join us for last week’s live broadcast, ‘Daisy Friends.’ It was a gentle floral theme last week, with some bright pink and yellow hues to really make the finished painting pop! I’ve seen your own versions on the Loose Watercolour Beginners’ Facebook Group, and I have to say - colour me impressed! You’re all improving your skills in leaps and bounds, and you should be incredibly proud of yourselves.
If you’d like to join in next week’s live broadcast, they’re typically on every Monday night at 8pm GMT, so come and join in the fun. The link is posted on Facebook, YouTube, and everywhere you get your loose watercolour news, and you can also access the broadcast here: https://loosewatercolours.com/live-broadcast/
And if you’d like to see everyone’s magnificent paintings for yourselves, why not join the Loose Watercolour Beginners’ Facebook Group? That way, you’ll also get regular reminders and painting tips every week, and you’ll never miss a live broadcast again! You can join here for free via the link: https://m.facebook.com/groups/753969806117098/?ref=share
If you’d like to paint another summery subject this week, don’t miss out on ‘Strawberry & Bee,’ the new Wash & Line tutorial available now on Patreon. Wash & Line is my own interpretation of Line and Wash, and the darker outline adds much more of a dramatic streak to your paintings. It’s an ideal technique if you want to add an extra challenge to your watercolour painting, or just if you want to test your skills and try something a little different with your practice. If you’d like to give it a go yourselves, here’s the link to my Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/andrewgeesonloosewatercolours
If that’s not enough, there’s also a new tutorial available on the loose watercolour website - and that’s right, it’s another floral whilst we’re still in the last days of summer. ‘Sunflower Dance’ is a bit more of a dramatic composition, especially with the deep blue background shade, but I think it makes the flower stand out just that little bit more. If you’d like to give it a go yourselves, watch along via the website: loosewatercolours.com
In terms of my own painting this past week, I’ve been out and about in Cambridge. If you’ve never been, it’s well worth a visit - there’s lots of lovely things to paint, as it’s a lovely little university city down south. So of course, I managed to find some artistic inspiration…
Toby’s also been admiring some art this week - especially the new canvas that’s just gone up in our kitchen. In fact, he’s made himself right at home - I reckon we’ll make an art critic of him yet!
As it’s bank holiday weekend, I thought I’d give you all a little treat - a free tutorial to paint along to! I hope you all enjoy ‘Blue Magnolia’ as much as I did, and I look forward to seeing all of your masterpieces on the Facebook Group once you’ve given it a go!
I’m also quite curious - Loose Watercolours is currently going through a little bit of a revamp, and as part of that, I’ve been thinking a lot about the types of tutorials that I’m creating. So I thought I’d put it to you all - what kinds of things would you all find most useful in learning about when painting loose? Just let me know in the poll below.
That’s all from me this week, as Toby and I have some more art critiquing to do. Which means that there’s an art documentary on TV that’s caught my eye in the listings all week, and we’ve been quite excited to watch it.
In the meantime though, as always, there’s an exclusive tutorial at the end of this post just for paid subscribers - after all, this Substack wouldn’t be possible without your help! An enormous thank you as always for all of your support, and I hope you enjoy painting along to ‘Three Colour Delight!’
That’s all from Toby and I though, and we’ll be back in your inboxes very soon! In the meantime, have a lovely weekend, and happy painting!
