Hello everyone, and welcome back to this week’s edition of Loose Watercolours! How’s your week been? Absolutely fabulous, I hope. Apparently it’s the Spring Equinox today, which means that spring is officially here. Few. I was beginning to forget what it was like to have lighter evenings. The seasons changing can’t come soon enough, and Toby and I have been enjoying the nicer weather. And it’s the perfect time for painting, of course!

It was lovely to see you all at the last live broadcast, which was ‘Daffodil Days.’ If you’re looking to paint more over this year, why not come along to one of the live broadcasts? They’re usually on Monday nights at 8pm GMT, and you can watch them by popping along here: loosewatercolours.com & Patreon (I broadcast on both at the same time.)

In fact, why not take a look at some of these fantastic paintings that you’ve all done during last week’s broadcast? Let me know if you can spot yours - there’s a lovely line up this week, and a beautiful gallery of pictures to admire!

If you’re wanting to test out your paintbrushes this week, then why not head over to Patreon, where there’s a brand new tutorial. This week’s offering is ‘Beginner’s Single Rose,' so perfect for the spring season! You can give it a go by following the link here: https://www.patreon.com/cw/andrewgeesonloosewatercolours

And here’s the line drawing.

Clipsham, Lincolnshire.
Toby enjoyed a nice day out!

What else have we been up to this week? Well, Toby and I have been enjoying some lovely little adventures, including to Clipsham in Lincolnshire. A lovely little village, they have a seven hundred metre avenue of yew trees leading to the local hall that date back to the 1870s. If you’re wondering how many trees that is in total, it’s a whopping 137!

One of the topiary trees in the garden in front of the gate house was extra special. As you can see from the photos, it was clipped in 1969, the year of the moon landing, and they had a lovely little tribute to it. All in all, Toby and I really enjoyed it! There were lots of interesting things to sniff and paint.

In terms of my own painting this week, I’ve been enjoying the spring sunshine, so of course, I’ve been practicing my plein air skills. And here’s what I came up with! I’ve named it ‘Red Bridge.’ Rather inventive, if I do say so myself.

What are your plans for the rest of the year? If you’ve got some free time and fancy painting, why not join me in beautiful Portugal from the 17th to the 24th October 2026, where you can enjoy a seven day watercolour holiday with five days tuition! You’ll stay at an amazing four star hotel, the Vila Do Obidos, and have a fantastic time painting all of the beautiful sights of the Iberian Peninsula.

If you’d like to find out more, you can visit Alpha Painting Holidays at alphapaintingholidays.com, by mobile phone at +44 (0) 1934 733877, or by email at joinus@alphapaintingholidays.com.

Are you looking for a new hobby now that the sun is shining? Perhaps you want to practice some plein air out in the cool spring breeze? If so, why not treat yourselves to a set of Loose Gang brushes? If you’re interested, you can find them by following the link here: https://www.patreon.com/andrewgeesonloosewatercolours/shop/loose-gang-brush-set-28089?source=storefront

That’s all from me this week, as I’ve just caught a whiff of something delicious - I think there might be a cake fresh out the oven, and I simply must go and investigate, before it’s all gobbled up. As always, however, this week there’s an exclusive tutorial available especially for all of you lovely paid subscribers - after all, it’s your support that helps keep this Substack running! So I hope you all enjoy painting along to ‘Magnolia Spring.’

Toby and I will be back in your inboxes very soon, but until next time, it’s goodbye from us both. Have a lovely week, and happy painting!

‘Magnolia Spring.’
