January winds
Even though it's cold outside, there's plenty of painting to be done!
Hello everyone, and welcome back to this week’s edition of Loose Watercolours! How’s your January been so far? Have you stuck to any resolutions? Forgotten them all together? However it’s been, it’s time for a fresh start, and what better time to do some painting! I, for one, am looking forward to a great new year of painting, and I’ve got some exciting things in the works for this year, including several painting holidays coming up in the UK and Portugal, which you can join if you’d like.
January’s been bitterly cold over here in Looseville, especially as I’ve been doing a spot of outdoor painting here and there. The dregs of Christmas have all blown away now, and there’s no turkey to be found anywhere in the fridge. But Toby the dog is doing well though, and is still really enjoying all of his Christmas toys.
It was lovely to see you all at the last live broadcast, which was ‘New Floral, New Year.’ If you’re looking to paint more over this new year, why not come along to one of the live broadcasts? They’re usually on Monday nights at 8pm GMT, and you can watch them by popping along here: loosewatercolours.com
In fact, why not look at some of these fantastic paintings that you’ve all done? Let me know if you can spot yours!
If you’d like some more painting practice, there’s another tutorial available for you to try just below. ‘Winter Plant Pot’ is a beginners’ tutorial where you can have some floral fun - and end up with a nice painting to boot!
I also thought that with the new year, it might be a good idea to revisit our Tips & Tricks series - helping you improve your painting skills one step at a time. Today, we’re going to take a look at the wetness of paper - what it means, and how it impacts your finished painting. Watch the video below a few times to get all the information, and then think about bringing it into your own work.
And if you want some extra painting practice this week, there’s another tutorial available over on Patreon. If you want to paint along to ‘Winter Trees,’ follow the link here: https://www.patreon.com/cw/andrewgeesonloosewatercolours
You might not have heard, but the loose watercolours website has had a little bit of a revamp over the last month or two. Why not head over there and check it out? There’s lots of exciting things to discover, but in the meantime, let’s take a closer look at what membership of the website entails.

The cold weather has really got me thinking about warmer days recently. Maybe it’s the five blankets, or the steaming cup of tea fogging up my glasses, but either way, I’ve been thinking about summers spent painting plein air in Europe. Here’s one I did of the Arch of Constantine, painting in Rome right next to the Colosseum.
Maybe painting is a new year’s resolution for you, or maybe you’re just looking to treat someone special in your life. If so, why not upgrade to a set of Loose Gang brushes? If you’re interested, you can find them by following the link here: https://loosewatercolours.com/product-category/the-loose-gang
That’s all from me for now, as it’s Sunday evening here, so I’m off to think about what I want to do next week. After a nice cup of tea and a tasty dinner, of course. As always though, this week there’s an exclusive tutorial available especially for all of you lovely paid subscribers - after all, it’s your support that helps keep this Substack running! So I hope you all enjoy painting along to ‘Tea Cup Florals’ - a lovely outdoor painting and a great painting start to the new year.
Toby and I will be back in your inboxes very soon, but until next time, it’s goodbye from us both. Have a lovely week, and happy painting!
