Hello everyone, and welcome back to another week of loose watercolours. It seems like summer is officially here (to stay?). I don’t want to jinx it, but we had a lovely bout of warm weather yesterday, and there’s clear skies all around! Now I’ve said that, watch it rain every day for the rest of the week. But for now, let’s enjoy the moment - after all, that’s what painting is all about.
Thanks to all of you that joined last week’s live broadcast fun! We painted ‘Old Door in the Sun.’ I’ve seen lots of fantastic results on the Facebook Group this week, and even the Loose Gang joined in on the fun. As this Substack post is coming out on a Tuesday this week, there won’t be another broadcast until next Monday night at 8pm GMT, but I hope you’ll all come along and paint with me next week.

There’s a new tutorial available on loosewatercolours.com this week, ‘Tea in the Wild.’ Now this one is a little more advanced than usual, so don’t worry if you find it slightly trickier, but a lot of you have tried it already with some great results! Follow the link here if you’d like to try it out for yourselves: https://loosewatercolours.com/
If you want some more painting practice this week, there’s also a new Patreon tutorial now available, ‘Evening Setting.’ This is a good one to practice your scenery creation, as there’s some dramatic skyscapes at work here! If you’d like to be notified as soon as these tutorials are released, be sure to join in the Loose Watercolour Beginners Facebook Group, which now has over four thousand members! Wow! There’s reminders for the live broadcasts, as well as tips and tricks as to how to improve your painting practice. Plus, you can see what your fellow artists are up to and find some inspiration! The Loose Gang got up to a bit of sightseeing this week, as they went to visit a Renoir in Leicester city centre. It was on tour as part of the National Gallery’s National Treasures exhibition, which is celebrating the two hundredth birthday of the Gallery! Twelve of the gallery’s most famous paintings have been lent out to twelve galleries across the UK, and Renoir’s ‘The Umbrellas’ has made its way to the gallery in Leicester. So naturally, we had to go and take a look. If you’re based in the UK, it’s well worth a visit - the paintings have wound their way to most of the big cities in the UK, including Belfast, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Birmingham and Bristol, so it’s a nice day out!
With thoughts this week turning to sea breezes and holidays in the sun, what better subject for a painting than a bit of maritime inspiration? This week’s exclusive tutorial for paid subscribers (as always, thank you so much for all of your generous support) is ‘Calm See Line & Wash.’ I hope you all have as much fun painting along as I did! You can find the video at the end of this post.
That’s all from me, though, this week, as our annual village petanque match is starting up this week, and I’ve got to get some practice in. The trophy will be mine this year if I’ve got any say in it! Until next time, then, it’s goodbye from Toby and I, and hopefully the weather stays sunny from here on out. Have a lovely week, and happy painting!
